Meet My Mom

I would like your readers to know that sometimes there may be hidden treasures amongst their friends and neighbors. This hidden treasure is my Mom — Martha Gulliver of Farmington.

For the third year in a row, my mother spent countless hours hand knitting around 150 pair of mittens and gave them to the SAD 24 school in Van Buren (accepted by School Nurse Elaine Ouellette and Principal Chad Bell, above right photo) and, also did the same for the Jay area school systems in western Maine.

She spends most of her time during the hot summer days hand knitting mittens in all sizes so that some of our students in our district will stay warm when they go out to recess when the weather gets cold. Sometimes the students may forget their gloves or mittens, so she wanted to help out in a way she could.

I personally am so very proud of my Mom because she wanted to be anonymous but she is gracious and unselfish. I want to say, in this day and age it seems everyone wants a buck for a deed, but my mother did as her mother and it came from her heart to give without receiving in return. She stated to me that if she received even a penny for any of the mittens that she wouldn’t do it anymore. She taught me the meaning of giving and, as her daughter, I want to say that I am so extremely proud of her!

She is a role model and I am so amazed by her contribution. It comes from her heart. She also said to me that while she was growing up that her mom always had homemade mittens for her big family. That they were poor, but they were always warm.

Mom did receive two beautiful thank-you cards and she holds onto them knowing she was appreciated.

She wanted to be anonymous but, I wanted to say that it shouldn’t go unnoticed. She’s an amazing mother and I am so very proud of her! I am hoping that I make my daughter as proud when I am older as I am today of my mother.

May other good deeds be noticed and appreciated. If you see her, let her know that she is special!
