Summer hiatus concludes for Caribou Daughters of Isabella Circle

The Daughters of Isabella held their first fall meeting on Sept. 4 at the Parish Center in Caribou.

The 50/50 raffle was won by Elizabeth Beaulieu, who returned all her winnings to the circle. Happy birthdays celebrated for the month of September resulted in Doris Albert receiving a small gift.

The meeting was called to order by a past regent, Dolores D. Martin, who welcomed everyone back after the summer break.

Cards were signed at this meeting and sent to Gail Hjort, regent, whose step-father just passed away and to Mary Ellen Field, vice regent, whose mom just passed away.

Communications received to the Caribou Daughters of Isabella included a thank-you note from Joseph and Dolores Martin on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary; a thank-you note received from Vi Willard for all the cards and well wishes on the occasion of her 90th birthday; a thank-you note from Paige Nadeau, recipient of the 2012 scholarship from the Caribou circle and a thank-you note from Smile Train for a $250 donation for a young child to have cleft palate surgery.

Other communications received included: a letter from Mary Magdalene Circle in Presque Isle regarding selling their dragonfly pins as a fundraiser; a letter from Michael LaGasse, business administrator for Parish of the Precious Blood, regarding new guidelines and procedures for the rental of the parish halls; a letter defending Marriage in the Public Square that was held at Holy Rosary for The County on Sept. 14. The Daughters of Isabella were asked to furnish sweets for the event

Two baby afghans and two bonnets were donated to the Circle by longtime member Jeannine Belanger to supplement the group’s layettes.

There will be a long form Conferral of Degrees for Daughters of Isabella members from Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle, Van Buren and Madawaska on Saturday, Sept. 29 in Madawaska. The conferral is given every five years and is for all the new members who have joined the respective circles. Regent Gail Hjort will be contacting the new members from her Circle to attend. The conferral will take place at 1 p.m., followed by Mass at 4 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas in Madawaska, followed by a buffet dinner at Long Lake Sporting Club.

Regent Hjort will report on the highlights of the International Convention at the Daughters of Isabella October meeting, which is also when the recently arrived discount cards will be distributed. These are discount cards that can be used at area businesses everyday throughout the year and the proceeds from the sale of these cards benefit the Daughter’s of Isabella’s charitable causes.

Next month’s Daughters of Isabella meeting will be a potluck supper; State Vice Regent Martha Dufour and Raymond Corriveau will be in attendance to audit the Circle’s books. Dolores Martin, Holy Rosary Circle No. 638 Scribe, reminded the Daughters of Isabella members to make certain they signed the attendance and activity sheets.
