Lund, Vikes tops in cross country meet

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Several of Aroostook County’s cross country teams converged at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Friday for a meet, with the Caribou boys and Washburn girls turning in dominating performances for victories.

In the boys’ meet, the first three finishers on the 3.1-mile course were Vikings as they ended up with a team score of 22.

The host Wildcats were next with 40, followed by Washburn with 69.

Ron Lund fashioned a time of 18 minutes, 2.9 seconds to finish just under seven seconds ahead of runner-up Lucas Kinney (18:09.6). In third place was teammate Ryan Washington with a 18:27.1 clocking.

Nick Lunn of Hodgdon and Brendan Cyr of Caribou both came in under the 19-minute barrier and were fourth and fifth, respectively. Lunn’s time was 18:50.2 and Cyr’s was 18:56.1

Washburn’s Noah Caron led his team and was just three seconds behind Nunez at 19:36.7 to sneak into the overall top 10.

The Washburn girls proved that they will be one of the favorites for an Eastern Maine and state Class C title by sending three runners across the finish line first and having four in the top five.

Washburn scored 24 points, followed by Caribou with 38, Presque Isle with 77 and GHCA with 102.

Carsyn Koch of the Beavers stole the show, finishing 2:18.89 ahead of runner-up and teammate Mackenzie Worcester. Koch’s time was 20:17.6 and Worcester came in at 22:36.89. Carmen Bragg, also of Washburn, finished third in 22:39.34.

Mackenzie Belyea of Caribou came in fourth overall at 22:52.58 and Emmy Churchill of Washburn rounded out the top five with a 23:07.46 clocking.
