CARIBOU — Caribou City Councilor Bryan Thompson’s resignation was regretfully accepted during Monday’s City Council meeting.

“Can I make a motion that we don’t accept it? Does he have to stay then?” Councilor Gary Aiken joked.

Thompson expressed to the council that due to lifestyle and professional changes, he no longer felt he was able to dedicate the level of commitment that is needed for the position of a councilor.

“As many of you know, I’ve had a lot of changes in my personal life since I ran for council,” Thompson said, adding that he first wanted be on the council because of his love for the city of Caribou.

“Since then, my family has grown by one child and, most recently, I have taken on two new career paths; based on these recent changes, I don’t feel that I’m able to fill my duties as councilor to the level that is necessary for the position,” he said.

Thompson added that he has enjoyed being on the council and requested that his fellow councilors consider maintaining his appointment to the Caribou Economic Growth Council.

“I would request to [keep] that appointment to maintain my involvement with the community, and I feel that I can assist in that area.”

The council agreed to keep Thompson on the Caribou Economic Growth Council and regretfully accepted his resignation as of Sept. 11.

The council also discussed upcoming repairs to the Grimes Mills Road, changing the phone systems in five departments to more reliable services and discussed facets of the quickly approaching budget season.

Please see next week’s issue of the Aroostook Republican for addition information about these three items and more from the City Council meeting; the group next meets on Monday, Sept. 24 starting at 6 p.m. for an executive session.
