115 Years Ago: April 29, 1897

• George Doe is building a photograph studio 18-feet by 35-feet on the Grange lot, Sweden Street, opposite the Hotel Burleigh.

• The eggs at the Caribou Fish Hatchery are nearly all hatched out. There were 250,000 trout, 150,000 Penobscot River salmon and 50,000 land-locked salmon eggs. The young fish will be transferred to the fish feeding station about the first of June.

 

• The up trains of the Canadian Pacific Railroad were obliged to stay in Caribou overnight Thursday and Friday on account of the ice and water on the track for several rods below the water tank between Caribou and Presque Isle.

100 Years Ago: April 25, 1912

• Charles Crock and Nellie Randall both of Woodland were united in marriage at the Methodist Parsonage by Rev. J.H. Gray on Saturday, April 20.

• Isabelle McNeal returned to Presque Isle Aroostook State Normal School Monday after having spent a few days at her home on Limestone Street.

• Peter Theriault, game warden was in Caribou Tuesday and said that he recently discovered four moose hides (three cows and a bull) between Square Lake and Van Buren. He expects to secure evidence, which will convict the guilty parties.

• H.O. Spencer had a carload of Overland automobiles arrive this week.

• W.H. Laffaty has taken the agency for the Flanders automobile.

75 Years Ago: April 29, 1937

• Anita Cyr, who just graduated from the Golden Beauty Culture School in Portland, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Cyr.

• A. Reginald Roderick is getting ready for a busy season by completely redecorating his photo finishing studio and making some changes in arrangement.

• Miss Kay Wakem, who has for more than four years been the efficient and popular bookkeeper at the Republican office, severed her connection here last Saturday and left Tuesday for Binghamton, New York, where she will take a course in beauty culture.

• Miss Orilla Plourde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floren Plourde of Stockholm and Fredrick Forsman were married at the St. Therese Rectory by Rev. Fr. George Cyr on Saturday.

• Mr. and Mrs. Grover Wardwell announce the marriage of their daughter, Nellie Jane, to Stephen P. Albee of Biddeford. The marriage took place on April 17, in Biddeford.

50 Years Ago: April 26, 1962

• Hartley Jepson and Lewis Campbell were among the winners in the Ester Egg contest sponsored by the Caribou merchants, each winning a ham.

• Miss Ruth Milton spent the Easter holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Milton. She is a student nurse at the Grace New Haven School of Nursing in New Haven, Conn.

• Teddy Pierson was guest of honor at a surprise party given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.P. Pierson, on his 16th birthday. Guests included Linda Libby, Peggy Mahoney, Patty Thurston, Sue Clowes, Candy Johnson, Kristi Pierson, Mike Henderson, J.R. Robinson, Eddie MacKinnon, John Corey and Jimmy Briggs.

• The fourth annual Teachers Minstrel Show will be held at Caribou High School on May 2 and 3. Proceeds, as in previous years will be used entirely as scholarships for worthy students graduating from Caribou High School. The minstrel show is again under the direction of David Haskell, with music being supplied by Ken Matthews. A special afternoon performance for preschool and grammar school students will be held on May 1.  

• Mr. and Mrs. Alton Wardwell, Lois, Carol Ann, Elaine and Gregory were guess of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Ziegler and Mrs. Florentine Quist when birthday greeting were extended to Debbie Ziegler on her fourth birthday.
