VAN BUREN/HAMLIN — John Parent, a senior at Van Buren District Secondary School, has been chosen to receive the 2012 MPA Principal’s Award.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principal’s Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

John is the son of William and Lisa Parent of Hamlin and, according to school officials, “John is well-deserving of this award,” they said, describing him as a hard worker both in and out of the classroom.

“John is Student Senate (president), National Honor Society member and vice-president, journalism (editor) and participated in Voice of Democracy Speech competition,” officials said. “He has also participated in chess, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball and tennis. With all that John is involved in during school, he still manages to maintain high honors.”

John has been an active member of Catholic Youth Ministry/singer/ altar server/lector at St. Joseph’s Church.

“John is an excellent candidate to represent the class of 2012,” said Chad Bell, district principal. “His hard work and dedication is the epitome of what the Aroostook County and St. John Valley is all about.”

John will attend the University of Maine at Orono/Maine Maritime Academy with a major of mechanical engineering.

Both Parent and Bell attended a special award banquet honoring all the Principal Award recipients on April 7, 2012 at the Spectacular Events Center in Bangor.
