MADAWASKA — An early morning rain shower didn’t stop more than 50 skiers from heading to Four Seasons Trails for the fourth annual Acadia Federal Credit Union Marathon on Sunday. By race start the weather had cleared and participants were treated to warm spring-like skiing. Despite the high temperatures the course held up with plenty of snow and great conditions.

A pack of men skied together for much of the 40km race, but by the end two skiers were out front. UMPI skier Joey Bard of Caribou finished first with a time of 2:21:14, while Maine Winter Sports Center athlete Austin Ross was second in 2:21:25. Another UMPI athlete Justin Fereshetian was third in 2:22:42.
On the women’s side Lauren Jacobs of Presque Isle was the winner with a time of 2:32:31. The race for second was tight with a lunge for the finish line determining the outcome. Sarah Dominick of Stockholm just edged out Justine Cyr of Fort Kent, finishing with a time of 2:39:56.
This year’s Acadia FCU Marathon featured two new additions — a children’s ski tour and cash prizes for the top five men and women in the 40km race.
Acadia FCU has been the lead sponsor of the marathon since its inception four years ago. President and CEO David Desjardins was on hand to watch the race and present awards.
“We believe it is important to support community events,” Desjardins said of their sponsorship. “This race helps build community and we are very proud to support it.”
