UMFK to honor Cousins

FORT KENT — The University of Maine at Fort Kent will host its fifth annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner and Ceremony on Saturday, March 24 in the University’s Sports Center and a Caribou native is being honored.

Guy Cousins, will be joined by Sterling LeBlanc, Paula Martin Swemke, Beth Daigle King and Andre Anderson as inductees.

Cousins played soccer at UMFK from 1977-80, serving as team captain during his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was a Northeast College Conference all-star four years running and was the Maine Soccer Colleges scoring champion in 1979 and ‘80, finishing fourth in the nation in scoring his final season.

He finished his career at UMFK with 62 goals and 35 assists.

Cousins earned an associate of arts in general studies in 1981, and a bachelor of science in education in 1983. He graduated cum laude, with a grade point average of 3.31. He later earned a master of social work degree from the University of Dundee in Scotland.

Since graduation, Cousin’s professional experiences have taken him to live and practice in Italy and Scotland, as well in the United States. He has worked in school, community, residential, and hospital-based settings with adults, children, adolescents, couples and families.

He is also active in community work, coaching two high school sports teams and is a member of the board of a local youth soccer association. He twice was selected Coach of the Year by the Kennebec Journal for girls soccer, and by the Mountain Valley Conference coaches for tennis.

Cousins joined the Maine Office of Substance Abuse (OSA) in 2006 as its associate director, and later as acting director. He was appointed director of OSA in 2008. He was appointed acting director of Adult Mental Health Services in 2011 and was asked to integrate the two offices within the Department of Health and Human Services.

This year’s ceremony also recognizes the silver anniversary of the heralded 1986-87 men’s basketball team coached by Larry Murphy, who is also in the UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame ceremony begins at 5 p.m. with a social followed by a banquet and awards ceremony. Tickets for the banquet are $25 per person and may be purchased through the UMFK Alumni Affairs office at 834-7557.
