Fine workmanship went into the creation of this one-of-a-kind wooden tractor-trailer truck, made by Wally Mahan Jr., of Blaine, and auctioned off for $1,000 during AMHC’s eighth annual Andy Santerre Sno-Run event on Feb. 11 at The Crow’s Nest in Presque Isle. Bidding was lively on this item, with Santerre’s friend, Darrell Wallace Sr. named the winner of the unique creation.

Parker Tompkins, of Blaine, was the lucky holder of the winning ticket for a 2012 Polaris Pro R 120 child’s snowmobile. He was presented his prize on Feb. 18 at County Sports in Caribou.

“County Sports very generously donated another child’s sled for us to raffle again this year. They’ve been supporters of the fundraiser since its inception,” said event organizer Joe Chamberlain.

Tompkins said he wasn’t sure what his plans were for the sled, since he didn’t have children who could use it.

“I bought the ticket at the event; this was my first time attending the dinner,” said Tompkins.

“I plan to tell everyone about this event and plan to go next year,” added Tompkins, as he accepted the keys to his new snowmobile from Dave Morrow, of County Sports. Tompkins indicated he may be looking to sell the sled but hasn’t decided for sure what his plans are. “Or I’ll have to go on a pretty strict diet.”

Dave Corey, of Caribou, had his ticket selected as the winner of the hand-made birdhouse, created by local artisan Bill Landes.

Corey said the feeder was more for his wife than for himself, although he will be busy maintaining it.

“I’ll have to fill it with bird feed and take care of it. It’s really more for my wife, Lorrie,” said Corey.

Corey said although he wasn’t able to attend this year’s fundraiser, he’d like to take part next year.

“I had to work downstate this year, so I couldn’t attend any of it. I’d absolutely love to attend next year. It sounds like a great time,” said Corey.

Chamberlain said the raffles raised several thousand dollars which will aid the organization in working with victims and their loved ones deal with sexual assault issues.

About $52,000 was raised this year — much of it coming from the annual auction. Chamberlain said one item in particular raised a record price.

“A $1,000 bid won a hand-made tractor-trailer truck made by Wally Mahan Jr., of Blaine. One of Andy’s guys — Darrell Wallace Sr. — bought it for $1,000,” said Chamberlain. “We had some heavy bidding on it but Darrell’s the winner.”

“We’re very grateful to the many people and businesses who donated items for auction. And we’re pleased to have local crafters like Bill and Wally, who create such fantastic pieces, willing to donate for the cause,” said Chamberlain.
