Washburn wins big last week; FF and CAHS ranked in the top four

The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats are the lone undefeated team in Aroostook County, boys or girls.

The Washburn Lady Beavers have one loss and Central Aroostook and Fort Fairfield are also having strong seasons.

Caribou Middle School cheerleaders under the direction of Coach Brittany Kirby competed in the 2012 Junior High Aroostook League Cheering Competition held at Central Aroostook High School earlier this month. They received the award for Best Team Motions. Individuals winning in the All-Star Competition include Irene Thibodeau for Grade 8 Jumps and Hannah MacDonald for Grade 6-7 Jumps. Winning for Group Stunts were Irene Thibodeau, Hannah MacDonald, Madelyn Malone, Kirsten Haney and Heather LaMothe. Other team members include Laiken Tarbox, Lariah Longley, Taylor St. Peter, Tamara Walsh, Kassidy Caron, Chelsea Chapman, Kelsey St. Peter, Justice Flannery, Alyssa Saucier and Makayla Madore.

Here’s a recap of games played through Monday, Jan. 23:

Washburn 70, Ashland 18 — At Ashland Monday, freshman MacKenzie Worcester scored a game-high 28 points to help Washburn roll to the victory.

Carmen Bragg added 12 points for the 12-1 winners and Olivia Doody added 10.

Anna Paradis scored six points to lead 3-10 Ashland.

Fort Fairfield 65, Easton 36 — At Fort Fairfield Monday, Amanda Hotham had 28 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Tigers to their 10th win against two losses.

Danielle Tracy added 10 points for the Tigers.

Easton (7-6) was led by Carla Halvorson with 11 points.

Fort Fairfield has a big game tonight against Central Aroostook in Mars Hill. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Fort Fairfield is currently in second place in Eastern Maine Class D and Central Aroostook is ranked fourth.

Presque Isle 78, MDI 31 — The Presque Isle Wildcats Saturday picked up their second win by 50 or more points in two days at home, downing MDI, 78-31.

Presque Isle outscored Mount Desert Island 33-2 in the second quarter to record their 13th win of the season.

Chandler Guerrette led the Wildcats with 22 points. Megan Ireland scored 17 points and Hannah Graham added 12.

MDI, 10-4, was led by Delenn Colson with 10 points.

Fort Kent 43, Fort Fairfield 31 — At Fort Fairfield Saturday, Lauren Doak netted 12 points to lead the Warriors to the win over Fort Fairfield.

Fort Kent (8-6) held the Tigers to 12 second-half points after leading 21-19 at the half.

Fort Fairfield (9-2) was led by Hotham with 21 points.

Ellsworth 48, Caribou 36 — On the second day of their Aroostook County trip the Ellsworth Lady Eagles were able to pick up their second win of the year against the Caribou Vikings, 48-36.

Ellsworth is now 2-10 on the season. Caribou falls to 2-13.

MDI 51, Caribou 38 — At Caribou Friday, Mount Desert Island took a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter en route to improving to 10-3.

Abby Jewett had 13 points for MDI and Hannah Shaw added 10.

Alexa Massey paced 2-12 Caribou with 11 points and Katelynn Tardie put in eight.

Presque Isle 72, Ellsworth 21 — After a sluggish first half against Ellsworth on Friday Presque Isle found their groove and trounced the Eagles by 50 points, 72-21.

The Wildcats outscored Ellsworth, 47-11, in the second half to stay unbeaten at 12-0.

Guerrette paced the winners with 24 points and Ireland added 14. Stewart chipped in with eight points.

Limestone/MSSM 62, Ashland 32 — At Limestone Friday, the Eagles evened their record at 6-6 with a 30-point win over the Hornets.

Danielle Pelkey paced the winners with 17 points and Stephanie Leighton added 13. Melissa Cantafio added 11 points and Amanda Allen put in 10.

Kayla Cote scored 13 points to lead 3-9 Ashland.

Fort Fairfield 72, Wisdom 28 — At St. Agatha Thursday, Sydney Churchill drilled seven 3-pointers, five in the first quarter, and finished with 25 points to lead the Tigers by the Pioneers.

Hotham chipped in with 16 points for the 9-1 winners.

Vanessa Pelletier paced 2-10 Wisdom with 12 points.

Presque Isle 61, Houlton 32 — The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats put their perfect record on the line Wednesday in the Shiretown and ran out to a big lead early to top Houlton, 61-32.

The Wildcats outscored Houlton 23-4 during the second quarter to pull away.

Guerrette paced Presque Isle with 14 points. Ireland and Stewart added 11 points each for the 11-0 Wildcats, with Ireland making three 3-pointers. Graham chipped in with nine points for Presque Isle.

Amanda Fogarty scored 12 points for 7-4 Houlton.

Van Buren 77, Ashland 51 — At Ashland Wednesday, Van Buren’s Parise Rossignol recorded a triple-double in leading the Crusaders to the win.

Rossignol had 34 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Ashlie Wilson added 27 points and seven rebounds for the 10-2 Crusaders, who scored 30 points in the second quarter to build a 50-26 lead.

Cote led 3-8 Ashland with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while Sophie Theriault had eight points and nine rebounds.

Washburn 82, Greater Houlton Christian Academy 28 — The Washburn Lady Beavers improved their record to 11-1 with a home victory over GHCA on Jan. 17.

Worcester led the Beavers with 30 points. She also dished out eight assists. Oliva Doody added 15 points, while Bragg had nine points and 10 assists.

Allison Little paced 0-8 Greater Houlton Christian Academy with nine points.

Fort Fairfield 57, Hodgdon 49 — At Fort Fairfield Jan. 17, Hotham scored 22 points to power the Tigers past the Hawks.

Nicole Giberson chipped in with eight points for the 8-1 winners while Logan Bubar and Danielle Tracy each added six.
