How do you fit 150 years of history into one edition of the newspaper?
The simple answer is: you don’t.
That’s partly why we decided to publish three special editions in celebration of Presque Isle’s 150th birthday, starting with this one. Two more sections will follow, with run dates scheduled for August and November. All three will be available for purchase in time for the holidays. The series begins with this edition, featuring churches and organizations. The next edition will focus on schools and businesses. The final supplement will feature city history and any items that didn’t make it into an earlier section.
Documenting history for a project like this isn’t an easy task. Staff at the Star-Herald sought help from the public to create this special edition and welcomed for the upcoming supplements as well.
We called on local experts and long-kept scrapbooks for information and poked through our own dusty archives for other pieces. Old pictures were added and the pages were topped off with different memories and personal anecdotes just too interesting to leave out.
And while we cannot claim to have a completely comprehensive history of the Presque Isle area in these sections, we do hope to offer a snapshot of life in the Star City over the centuries and a glimpse of what it may become in the future.
