Worcester scores milestone bucket in preseason tourney

WASHBURN — It was a big weekend for Washburn’s Mitch Worcester, not only was he named MVP of the Washburn Preseason Basketball Tournament but also scored his 1000th career point.

Washburn’s Mitch Worcester is honored Friday night after scoring his 1000th career point at Washburn District High School. Joining Worcester on the court is his mother Kim, also a 1000 point scorer at Washburn and father Larry, who had more than a 1000 points at UMPI.

In the nightcap of the Friday games Washburn took on Madawaska. Worcester, a junior, entered the contest only nine points away from 1000. It didn’t take long to reach the mark. Three three-pointers in the first seven minutes gave Worcester the needed nine points.

After hitting the milestone bucket the crowd gave him a standing ovation as the game was stopped and Worcester was honored on court along with his parents.

Washburn won the game going away, 81-41. In other Friday contests Easton topped Ashland by a score of 80-39 and Central Aroostook nipped Houlton, 66-63.

On Saturday Madawaska beat Ashland, 46-37, Central Aroostook need two overtimes to stop Easton, 59-54 and Washburn downed Houlton, 64-45.

In addition to Worcester being named MVP, teammate Jordan McLaughlin was named to the All-Star team. Joining him were Elijah Crockett and Kyle Bouchard of Houlton, Mike McClung of CAHS and Reid Clark of Easton.
