115 Years Ago: Nov. 26, 1896
• Seven to eight inches of snow fell Saturday afternoon and during the night. Sunday morning the people made use of their sleighs, cutters, etc., so that by afternoon the sleighing was quite good.
• Potatoes are at 40 cents per barrel today. The market for Aroostook potatoes is being injured by the careless manner in which they are kept before they are sold. There should be reform in this direction.
• The good sleighing on Monday caused a large number of people to come to town and merchants did a large business.
• The following pupils of the high school have a clean record in attendance for the past term, neither absent nor tardy once: Edyth Holmes, Julia McLaughlin, Mattie Shaw, Mary Shaw, Sigred Iverson, Ella Nelson, Lucy Smith, Charles Violette and Mabel Trafton.
• At an early hour Monday morning, thermometers registered 20 degrees below zero.
100 Years Ago: Nov. 30, 1911
• Superintendent of Schools J.R. Libby has closed the school in South Caribou, on account of an epidemic of the mumps. Out of 24 scholars in the school, all but nine are afflicted with the disease mentioned.
• The engagement is announced of Miss Maud Harmon of Caribou to Arthur Hall of Revere Beach, Mass.
• M.H. Oak, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Oak of this town, who is attending the University of Maine was initiated last week into the Beta Theta Pi Society.
• S.W. Collins and Son have fitted the upstairs portion of the storehouse in the rear of their store for a garage and have several new Ford cars stored there, ready for next year’s trade. The repair department is under the charge of Irad Hagerman.
• Potatoes are at $2.10 per barrel today.
75 Years Ago: Nov. 26, 1936
• Owing to the fact that there are more commercial students than there are typewriters at the high school, each senior taking the second year of typing must work 80 minutes a week as secretary to a teacher. The work will take up the equivalent of one day’s work in the typing room and may be anything which might be a secretary’s duty in an office. This extra work must be done in order for the students to receive one point as credit toward graduation.
• Cyril McLaughlin, Lyman Getchell and Cecil Weatherhead of Limestone were in town Saturday night, in attendance at the dance at the P. of H. Opera House.
• The Caribou Motor Company is having a large wooden addition built onto one of the buildings in the rear of their store on Sweden Street to be used as a greasing station for trucks and automobiles.
• Lawrence Elliot was the high point man in selling tickets to the Firemen’s Dance being held Thursday evening. He personally disposed of more than 100 tickets.
• Mrs. Agnes Beaulieu has closed her kindergarten school until after Christmas. This early recess was made necessary because of the great number of children having the mumps, only four out of a class of 13 being uninfected as yet.
50 Years Ago: Nov. 30, 1961
• Miss Pamela Pierson, home on vacation from Colby College, entertained at a supper party. Her guests were Paula Johnson, Barbara Higgins, Linda White, Lynn Espling, Dottie Thibodeau, Janice Swiek, Dottie Sleeper, Ruth Milton, Nancy Thibodeau, Ronald Harmon, James Close, John Haley, David Lyon, Mike Kelley, Jerry White and Gary Wyman.
• Vernon Palmer has returned to his studies at the University of Maine after spending the holiday weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Palmer.
• Miss Katrina Anderson, chief clerk of the Aroostook County Selective Service Office has announced that the December calls have been received which ask for 21 Aroostook County men to report for an active duty in the U.S. Army during December. Ten men will be inducted Dec. 5 and 11 men will go into uniform on Dec. 12.
• Miss Ruth Milton, a student at the Grace New Haven School of Nursing in New Haven, Conn., spent the holiday weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Milton. This was her first visit home since she started training.
• G.W. Hitchings, boilerman third class, U.S.N., son of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Hitchings of Caribou, is serving aboard the ammunition ship U.S.S. Nitro, now on duty with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.
