The Seven Dwarves and the Zoltans emerged victorious in the high school indoor soccer tournament at NMCC over the weekend. The Seven Dwarves from Presque Isle defeated girls teams from Caribou and two teams from Ashland on their way to the title, while the Zoltans of Presque Isle had road blocks in the form of Ashland and their underclassmen teammates from last fall.
The Seven Dwarves rolled through the prelims with an undefeated record, setting up a semi final match up with the Ashland seniors. The Seven Dwarves’ offense was too much as they rolled to the 3-0 victory. Caribou scored early and often in their contest with the Hornets, cruising to the 4-0 and setting up the finals match up.
The Seven Dwarves jumped out to the early 2-0 lead and seemed on their way to the sure victory. Caribou cut the deficit in half, converting on a misplayed ball in front of the Dwarf net. The Dwarves added two more insurance goals, easily absorbing a second Caribou goal, to pick up the 4-2 victory. Suiting up for the Dwarves were Katrina Whittier, Hannah Cheney, Amber Griffin, Sarah Porter, Mackenzie Pinette, Kelsey Park, and Abbie Lapointe.
On the boys’ side, the Zoltans and Ashland locked up in an offensive shootout in semi final action. Goals came fast and furiously as the Zoltans jumped out to the early 1-0 lead only to have Ashland strike right back and tie it up. This continued for the entire game.
Luckily for the Zoltans they scored last, taking the 5-4 win. This created a rematch with the PI Underclassmen, who had tied their elder teammates in the preliminary round.
The Zoltans were out for redemption and bragging rights, taking an early lead and not looking back en route to the 5-2 victory. Zoltan players were Evan Richards, Russ Mortland, Warren Zubrick, Lucas Mathers, Eric Morris, Alex Carter, and Jason Johnson.
