On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Maine Warden Service responded to a discovery by deer hunters, of a body laying beside an ATV on the ITS 83 trail in Stockholm.
According to reports, the body was identified as Bruce Johnson, 46, of New Sweden, who was last seen on Friday, Oct. 28 around 4 p.m. and was discovered by the hunters at approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday. Johnson had not been reported missing.
Officials stated it appeared that while driving his ATV during the night, Johnson lost control of his Yamaha Grizzly 700 ATV and the machine flipped, killing him instantly. Upon further investigation it was determined that Johnson apparently came upon debris from a fallen tree too quickly and tried to avoid the debris, when he lost control. Johnson was said to have had severe head trauma. He was not wearing a helmet.
The ATV was severely damaged in the incident as well.
The deceased was transported to Caribou where the Medical Examiner’s office was to conduct an examination.
Sgt. Durward Humphrey of the Maine Warden Service is in charge of the investigation and is being assisted by Wardens Ryan Fitzpatrick and Gary Sibley.
