Washburn moves on in soccer playoffs

The preliminary round of the high school soccer playoffs are over and now it’s on to the quarterfinals.

The Presque Isle Wildcats will be hosting Hermon this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex. Other home games include the Central Aroostook Panthers against the Machias Bulldogs at 2 p.m. and the Woodland Dragons traveling to Washburn to take on the Beavers at 3 p.m.

Easton will be on the road traveling to Dyer Brook to play the Southern Aroostook Warriors at 2 p.m.

Here’s a recap of preliminary games played Friday and Saturday:

Easton 3, Ashland 0 — The No. 5-seeded Easton Bears have moved on to the quarterfinals by topping Ashland 3-0 on Saturday in Easton.

Holden Turner provided all the offense Easton would need scoring two first-half goals.

Reid Clark contributed with an unassisted goal in the second half for the 13-2 Bears. Cody Halvorson and Ian Sotomayor each had an assist. Cody Tompkins blocked 10 of 13 shots.

“We are getting better every day, but we still have not recovered 100 percent from harvest break yet,” said Easton coach Ryan Shaw.

Jayme Dozier made 13 saves on 24 shots for  4-11 Ashland.

Easton’s next game is today on the road against the Southern Aroostook Warriors. Shaw said his team needs to bring their “A” game if they want to advance past the quarterfinals.

“We will need to find our quickness and touches again if we are going to be successful against Southern Aroostook,” said Shaw.

Easton did not play the Warriors in the regular season, but did play common opponents.

Mt. View 4, Caribou 0 — The Caribou Vikings’ season ended with a 4-0 loss to Mt. View on Saturday.

Playing at home in Thorndike, the No. 5 Mustangs controlled play against No. 12 Caribou, which finished the year at 5-10.

Mt. View scored two goals in each half to secure the win.

Matt Manter made eight saves on 12 shots for the Vikings.

Washburn 7, Fort Fairfield 0 — At Washburn Friday, the No. 3-seeded Beavers scored early and often in a 7-0 win over the 14th-ranked Fort Fairfield Tigers.

Jordan McLaughlin scored two goals as he broke a Washburn High School record by scoring his 81st career goal for the Beavers.

Mitchell Worcester chipped in three goals and had an assist for Washburn, and Nick Bragg contributed two goals and two assists. Ethan Pendexter notched two assists, and Cameron Bragg dished out an assist.

Zach Davis made eight saves on 11 shots for 11-2-1 Washburn. Dereck Dufour made nine saves on 24 shots for 2-11-2 Fort Fairfield.

“The boys are really starting to come together and play their best soccer of the season,” said Washburn coach Ben Goodwin. “I have been extremely happy with our midfield production. It has not only helped fuel our offense, but they have also done an excellent job at limiting the opposing teams’ attack.”

The Beavers play Woodland this afternoon at 3 p.m. in Washburn.

Southern Aroostook 6, LCS/MSSM 0 — At Dyer Brook Friday, Cody Lassonde had two goals and two assists and Patrick Goodall had a goal and an assist as No. 4 seed Southern Aroostook eliminated No. 13 Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

Trenton Cullinan, Cameron Landry and Parker Walker had the other goals, and Jesse Boulier had three saves on four shots.

Bret Butler made 11 saves on 19 shots for 2-11-2 LCS/MSSM.

Southern Aroostook hosts Easton today.
