Prelim games for high school girls soccer were few and far between in Aroostook, not because the teams in the area didn’t make the playoffs, the quality of play was so good many of the local schools were high seeds which afforded them a direct ticket to the quarterfinals.
The Presque Isle Wildcats and Caribou Vikings finished No. 1 and No. 3 in Class B and didn’t play their first playoff matches until yesterday. The Washburn girls finished first in Class D and Fort Fairfield was No. 3.
Quarterfinals for the girls were played yesterday after the print deadline for the Star-Herald and Aroostook Republican and details of those games will be in next week’s editions.
Recapping the two preliminary games played this past weekend:
Easton 8, Calvary Chapel 1 — Getting shots on net was not a problem for Easton as the girls downed Calvary Chapel 8-1 on Friday in Easton.
Carla Halvorson and Kylee Carter had three goals and an assist each to propel Easton past the team from Orrington.
Ariana Babineau had a goal and two assists for 9-5-1 Easton, the sixth seed, and Cassie Buck had the other goal. Haley Ambrose and Caitlin Monroe combined for four saves.
“The girls played extremely well, from the front line to the goalie,” said Easton coach Rachel Tomlinson. “Everyone passed well, communicated with each other, and we controlled the ball for most of the game.”
In an act of good sportsmanship the Easton girls found a pair of cleats for a Calvary Chapel player who forgot hers. Coach Tomlinson joked with the opposing coach that if that girl scored they would have to take the cleats back.
“Sure enough, Hope Downs scored their lone goal, but I was glad she got the opportunity to play,” said Tomlinson.
Easton traveled to Fort Fairfield yesterday for a quarterfinal match.
Central Aroostook 1, Deer Isle 0 — At Deer Isle Saturday, Marissa Anthony’s goal off an assist from Breanna York with 27:37 left in the first half helped the No. 10 Panthers upset the No. 7 Mariners.
Victoria McIntyre made seven saves on seven shots for the 6-6-3 winners of Mars Hill.
The win allowed the Panthers to move on to the quarterfinals to face the No. 2-seeded Penobscot Valley team.
