David A. Collins, Sr., 80, of Portage, Michigan passed away October 7, 2011. He was born January 9, 1931, in Caribou, Maine, the youngest of four sons of Samuel and Elizabeth (Black) Collins. He graduated from Caribou High School and went on to earn a BA in French from the University of Maine, a MA from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and a PhD from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. On June 23, 1953, he married the former Vera Eleanor Edfors who preceded him in death on April 16, 2006. On November 28, 2008, he married Diane Downing. He started as a professor at the University of New Hampshire before moving to Kalamazoo College where he headed the Romance Language Department until his retirement in 1996. David was passionate about music, languages, tennis, travel and his family.
In addition to his wife, David is survived by his children, Sheryl (Tom) Schrot of Stephenson, Michigan, David Jr. (Joyce Bailey) of Windham, Maine, Mark (Genie) of Andover, Massachusetts, Pete (Mary Anne) of Brentwood, Tennessee and Amy (Sharon Marrell) of Lakewood, Ohio; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and brothers, Samuel (Dorothy) of Rockland, Maine and Donald (Pat) of Caribou, Maine. He was preceded in death by brother, Douglas.
