Little Tina Louise, an approximately 7-week-old stray kitten, rests on her heating pad at Halfway Home Pet Rescue with her head nestled against her teddy. Tina Louise has already needed two visits to the vet and continues to be on antibiotics and eye ointment four times a day in addition to regular syringe feedings and hydration as needed. Many young kittens and cats coming to the pet rescue right now have come in very ill and requiring isolation as well as special care, according to HHPR President Norma Milton. “Tina is one of the more fortunate kittens as we are hopeful that we got her in time when her chances of recovery are greater than most,” she said, adding that Tina gains a little more strength, though the shelter’s veterinarian cautions that she is still quite fragile. HHPR receives no state or municipal funding, and Milton mentioned that the organization has been saving for a new building, adding that the shelter is totally dependent on their fundraising events and the kindness of their supporters. The shelter volunteers have expressed a desperate need for more Purina Kitten Chow donations. They are also looking for support in obtaining baked goods, fudge, crafts, and other items for their booth at the Caribou Arts & Craft Fair on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23. Items can be delivered to 11 Pioneer Ave., on Friday, Oct. 23. “The Arts & Craft Fair proceeds will go directly on our vet bill,” Milton said. Halfway Home Pet Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit, state licensed animal shelter at 11 Pioneer Ave in Caribou. The mailing address is PO Box 488, and website address is www.halfwayhomepetrescue.org.
