In the opening game of the finals, fans of the athletes lined the bleachers and ball field enjoying one of America’s favorite pastimes, on a beautiful summer evening in Caribou. The sounds of the crowd cheering could be heard throughout the neighborhood, as the odd smell combination of freshly mowed grass and fried hot dogs permeated the air.
Play was back and forth in the opening innings, and midway through the game, Savings Bank of Maine had a string of hits and some great pitching from Brennan Poitras. Camden Huck of Sleepers, pitched very effectively for his team. Batters were silenced by him until relief pitchers were brought in.
In the last couple of innings, good defensive plays from both the infield and outfield, especially from Marcus Caudill at second base for Savings Bank of Maine, kept Sleepers stifled. He fielded a grounder and tagged out the runner, closing the inning and to win the game 11-4 for Savings Bank of Maine.
Game 2 was played on Wednesday, July 13 under somewhat threatening skies. Pitching for Sleepers was Mason Huck, and Caleb Willett of Savings Bank of Maine was on the mound as well. Play was postponed due to thunder and lightning, in the third inning with the game all tied up at 1-1. The makeup date was a couple of days later.
With the fans once again around the field on the 15th, Savings Bank of Maine used Brennan Poitras on the mound and Mason Huck pitched for Sleepers. Hits for Savings Bank of Maine came from Jacob Burby, who homered, and Jaelynn Doody who crushed a pitch, hitting a triple and making it home on a passed ball.
When Mason Huck was in the batter’s box, he hit a solo home run to take the early lead for his Sleepers team.
But as with previous attempts to complete the game this was also was washed out in the sixth inning due to inclement weather, which takes us to day three of this playoff game.
When play resumed Brennan Poitras was again on the mound and with some good defense behind him, he closed out the half inning. With the score at 7-6 with Sleepers ahead and Savings Bank of Maine up last, Stewart Curtis was on the mound for Sleepers where he had to face Savings Bank of Maine’s bottom of the lineup starting with Seth Roy. Roy and Jaelynn Doody were on first and second with nobody out, when Caleb Willett stepped up to the plate. Sleepers made a pitching change and put Camden Huck on the mound. One pitch to Willett and the series was over. Willett went deep for a three-run homer to end the series 9-7. Savings Bank of Maine has earned the title of Caribou Little League Champions 2011.
