Successful Mentor a Job Corps Student Day

PRESQUE ISLE — Two students of the Loring Job Corps Center (LJC), Angela Bellamy and Kenyattah Ford, were selected to participate in Mentor a Job Corps Student Day and spend the day learning at congressional offices on June 9. Bellamy and Kenyattah were chosen after completing an interview process to determine which LJC students were particularly interested in learning about their elected officials and their service they provide to the communities they serve.

Bellamy spent the day at the office of Senator Snowe with District Representative Barbara Hayslett; Ford spent the day at Congressman Mike Michaud’s office with District Representative Sharon Campbell and Maine Staff Assistant Kimberly Rhon.

At the end of their one-day internship, the students were able to return to the center with a better appreciation and understanding of the operations of the district offices and the process in which the general public is able to communicate with senators and congressmen.

The event was sponsored by the Friends of Job Corps Congressional Caucus — a bipartisan group of members of Congress whose mission is to heighten the awareness and appreciation for Job Corps Center.

According to Business and Community Liason and Work-Based Learning Coordinator Pamela Buck, the event allowed students all over the nation to learn more about the important constituent and legislative work that members of Congress and their representatives do on behalf of Maine citizens.
