The Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 in Caribou, established in May 1947, has always maintained the cost of the flags and flag poles that grace the city’s streets from Memorial Day through Veteran’s Day. Regretably, this July 4th there will be only a few flags flying.
“As a result of the two recent severe storms we had here, the majority of the 80 flags and most of the flagpoles and brackets were destroyed,” said Peter Miesburger, past commander of the local VFW. “Historically, the general membership has taken responsibility for purchasing the flags/poles,” he added.
“Every attempt is being made to repair what we can for upcoming July 4th weekend,” Miesburger stated, “but we, the VFW members, want everyone to know that the absence of the flags is not due to any negligence.”
Because the damage of the flags/poles was the result of an act of nature, the VFW cannot claim the loss with their insurance company.
The estimated cost of replacing the 80 American flags and poles is $3,500. “It’s going to take us a while to recover from this,” said Miesburger.
Those who would like to help defray the costs replacing the flags/poles and or brackets are encouraged to contact the Lister/Knowlton VFW at 498-2761.
