Was it luck — or fate? Ann McCarthy-Doody recently stated, “ There is a wonderful saying that says, ‘When you give of yourself in kindness it will be returned to you tenfold,’ and we, (members of the Relay For Life Team Whoopers,) believe that is exactly what happened when six-year-old Nickie Deschaine was announced as the winner of this years’ Relay for Life, Team Whoopers’ $2,000 basket full of goodies.”

“Nickie is the daughter of cancer survivor, Tracy Deschaine,” said McCarthy-Doody, “ and she has been actively involved in the Relay for Life event for two years now. Some might remember little Nickie as the “Hula Hoop queen” of relay 2010 when she walked the entire length of the track while whooping with anyone and everyone who gave her a cheer.”

According to McCarthy-Doody, Nickie and her mom created a store on Facebook called Kiki’s Kloset where the six year old sells her own clothing and other items to raise money for children  diagnosed with cancer. So far she has donated to six families in need, most recently donating all of her profits from her store toward tickets for the basket. “ Nickies mission was to give back a special gift to a young mother who recently lost her 5-year-old son to leukemia,” said Doody.  Not only did this young lady sell her own clothing and toys to raise money to buy tickets for the raffle, she did so in hopes of winning to give again.”

“ I wanted to give Landen (Owens) mommy a special gift so she can still be happy at ‘Relay’ this year.” stated Deschaine. Nickie will share a special moment with the captain of Team McQueen, Naomi, in honor of Landen Lee Owens, who lost his challenge against cancer.

Ann McCarthy-Doody is the captain of the Rely for Life Team Whoopers .
