LIMESTONE — Students, staff and faculty of the Limestone Community School found themselves getting into some good books and periodicals on March 2 when they all “dropped everything and read.” For a specific amount of time, everyone in the school was reading a selection of their choice in conjunction with Read Across America Day.

“By celebrating Read Across America Day we help students understand that reading is fun, it can take you to many new and exciting places, and is an important part of everything we do each day,” said Cindy Edgecomb, literacy specialist at the school.
While the whole school was allocated time to sit down with a good read, preK to fourth-grade students were given the opportunity to have extra fun with reading and were visited in the afternoon by some guest readers, including members of the “Friends of the Library” group with the Robert A. Frost Memorial Library and other LCS staff. Among other page-turning favorite titles and authors featured during the day were selected works by Dr. Suess. The author of famed children’s books, such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” and “Wacky Wednesday,” his whimsical words inspired the students Read Across America treat — red and white cupcakes displayed in the shape of the Cat in the Hat’s hat.
This is the fifth year that all grade levels of the Limestone School have been participating in the literacy celebration; prior to altered the itinerary of the event to include the school’s upper level students, preK to fourth-grade students have been celebrating the nationwide literacy day for quite some time.
