Men’s hoop update
Griffeth Ford has taken over first place in the Caribou Men’s Basketball League. Through 10 games, the team holds an 9-1 mark to lead Freddy Ps (7-1) by half a game in the standings. Gagnon’s Studio is third at 4-4, followed by Loring Job Corps at 3-4 and Time Warner Cable at 4-6. St. Peter Construction and Leo’s Citgo have identical 3-6 marks, followed by Theriault Lawn Care at 2-7.

UMPI hosts women’s climbing night
PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a women’s climbing night on Jan. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Gentile Hall. Members of the community are invited to come in and enjoy climbing on UMPI’s 37-foot climbing wall. Gentile Hall members and UMPI students will be able to participate for free; non-members must pay the $7 day pass fee at the front desk upon arrival. Participants are asked to bring sneakers, comfortable clothing, a water bottle and their enthusiasm. For more information, contact Kim McCrea at 768-9401.
Middle school boys now 6-5
CARIBOU – The Caribou Middle School basketball team is nearing the end of its season, with just a week left on its schedule. The Vikings are 6-5 on the season after splitting a pair of recent games. Caribou beat Fort Kent 37-32 Jan. 5, but lost to Presque Isle 45-43 a day earlier.
Against the Wildcats, the Vikings led 11-6 in the first quarter and 18-16 at the break. Presque Isle took a 28-26 lead after three periods.
“This was a very close game throughout,” said Caribou coach Steve Perreault. “There were several lead changes with the game coming down to the wire. Caribou had a last-second shot to win, but missed it.”
Caribou was led by Dayne Savage with 16 points, including three 3-pointers. Taylor Thibodeau added 10; Nate Wall, five; and Carter Chabot, four. Presque Isle was led by Ben Nickerson and Andrew Patterson, each with 13.
Against Fort Kent, Caribou got off to a slow start, but rebounded nicely as the Vikings pressing defense wore down Fort Kent. Caribou trailed 11-5, 19-15 and 24-21 at the quarter breaks before outscoring Fort Kent 16-8 in the final stanza.
Colby Holdsworth had 13 to lead Caribou, while Thibodeau added nine and Dustin Bouchard had eight points, along with numerous steals. Taylor Miller and Michael Marquis played well on the defensive end for Caribou.
Fort Kent’s Kole Walker led them with eight points.

Team of the Year award program announced
PORTLAND – The Maine Red Claws and the Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association recently launched its new Team of the Year Award program that will honor two Maine high school varsity basketball teams – one boys and one girls. The winning teams will each receive $1,000 for their schools’ basketball programs. They will be honored at the Maine McDonald’s All-Star Games on March 12, 2011 at Husson University in Bangor and at a Red Claws game in March.
Nominations for the Team of the Year award are being sought and high school basketball coaches throughout the state are encouraged to make strides with their varsity teams to be in contention for this new award. In February, a committee comprised of representatives from McDonald’s of Maine, Maine Red Claws, and the MABC will review the nominations and select one boys and one girls varsity team that have made “an exceptional impact on Maine high school basketball and in the lives of others.”

Ski race postponed again
Due to lack of snow for a safe and fun event, the Caribou New Year’s Race (and xc ski tour, snowshoeing, sliding, and scavenger hunt!) has again been postponed, this time to Sunday, Jan. 23.
Friday FUNdamentals held at high school
This year’s Northern Skiers Club weekly Friday FUNdamentals sessions will take place Fridays at 6 p.m. at the Caribou Ski Center at Caribou High School. Adults looking to learn to cross country ski as beginners, or those looking to improve their technique a bit as intermediates, are welcome and encouraged to come join the fun.
