1935: American Legion fills1,000 bags with Christmas goodies

100 YEARS AGO: Dec. 29, 1910

• E.F. Shaw has purchased the Richardson farm in Fort Fairfield. Mr. Shaw believes in the future of Aroostook and that now is a good time to buy real estate.

• Mr. and Mrs. Luther hall gave a Christmas dinner, the following relatives being present: Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Hitchings, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Hitchings and children, Mrs. E. P. Shaw, Miss Alice Shaw, Everett Hitchings and Katherine Hitchings.

 

• Potatoes are quoted today at 85 cents per barrel.

75 YEARS AGO: Dec. 26. 1935

• Mrs. Eliza Bubar of the Grimes Road celebrated her 87th birthday on Dec. 26 at her home. The following were guests for dinner: Mr. and Mrs. George Wilcox and son, Floyd; Mrs. Phoebe Miller and daughter, Hilda; Mr. and Mrs. Emery Rossingol and daughters, Marion and Melvina; Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Doody, Jr.; Philip, Harold, George and Thelma Doody; Mr. and Mrs. John Bubar and family; Carise Bubar, Percy McDougal and Albert Parks.

• Caribou Boy Scouts did their good turn this week when they took charge of the gifts material sent here by the Bangor Daily News in response to that newspaper’s solicitation for letters to Santa Claus. Some 25 letters were forwarded to local organizations, involving requests from 139 children. From the materials sent, 25 boxes were made up so that each of the children had  a gift.

• Through funds solicited by members of the American Legion and contributions made by other  organizations, 1,000 boys and girls of needy families were made happy the day before Christmas when their parents brought to them from the town office liberally filled candy bags. Each bag contained a large popcorn ball, candy, nuts, peanuts and chewing gum.

• Nageb Corey, who has been employed as counterman for some time at Mike’s Place, has resigned. Mr. Corey was very popular with the patrons.

• Miss Eloise Larson of New Sweden, will be one of the first two nurses to go from the Cary Memorial Hospital to the Fordham Hospital in New York for a six months’ training.
