The winter sports season has begun anew as a flurry of games were played over the past four days. And based on the results of those opening games, it appears that a fine year of basketball awaits most Aroostook County girls basketball squads.

Washburn has looked particularly sharp in its first two games, victories over the two teams that met in last year’s Eastern Maine Class D championship game – Central Aroostook and Fort Fairfield.

Coaches are reminded to submit their game results to the newspaper in a timely manner so they may be included in the weekly wrapup.

The following is a recap of games played through Monday, Dec. 13.

Washburn 54, Fort Fairfield 46 — At Washburn Monday, the Beavers (2-0) knocked off the defending State Class D champion Fort Fairfield Tigers thanks to a fourth quarter rally. Fort Fairfield (1-1) led 15-14 in the first quarter, but Washburn took a 29-23 lead at halftime. The two squads were knotted at 40-40 after three stanzas.

In that fateful final quarter, Washburn outscored the Tigers 14-6 for the win.

Rebecca Campbell sparked the Beavers with 26 points, while Carmen Bragg added 13.

For Fort Fairfield, Amanda Hotham tallied 21 points, followed by Brooke Beaulieu with 14.
