He attended Houlton area schools and graduated from Colby College in 1953. After exploring other pursuits he embarked on a career in the newspaper business that spanned over 30 years. He was manager and editor of the Houlton Pioneer Times, business manager at Northeast Publishing Company overseeing four area papers, and during the latter part of his tenure with the company served as director of newspaper operations and executive editor. He was particularly interested in advancing the careers of young journalism majors enrolled in the University of Maine system. He was inducted into the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame on September 18, 2004.

Jack had an enduring love for nature and was an avid fly fisherman and hunter. He patrolled the back roads of Haynesville for many years in search of deer and partridge. Some of his best memories were times spent casting flies for Atlantic salmon on the Upsalquitch River in New Brunswick, Canada. Jack was also a master gardener and always managed to stay ahead of the weeds. He enjoyed his morning coffee at Ken’s Store and relaxing on the couch alongside his beloved cat with TV remote in hand. He was a member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks, the Houlton Community Golf Course as well as past President of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce and past President of the Maine Press Association.

Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Esther, and their three sons Robert of New Limerick, John of Brunswick and James of Somerville, Massachusetts, along with one grandson Cole of Brunswick.

The family expresses their thanks and appreciation to personnel and staff of Hospice and Visiting Nurses of Aroostook.

Friends may call at the Dunn Funeral Home Wednesday 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Thursday 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to the Houlton Humane Society or the Houlton Lodge of Elks Scholarship Fund, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton, 04730.
