CMS boys open with win, loss
While the high school hoop action does not tip off until Friday, Caribou Middle School has already begun its season. The Vikings defeated Fort Fairfield 52-29 on Nov. 29 and followed up with a tough 44-43 loss to Presque Isle Dec. 2.
Against Fort Fairfield, Caribou led 12-2, 26-13 and 40-18 at the quarter breaks. Dayne Savage and Nate Wall led the way for Caribou as both netted 12 points. Taylor Thibodeau added 10, while Colby Holdsworth had eight; and Carter Chabot and Dustin Bouchard had four each. Matt Milton was solid in rebounding for the Vikings.
Fort Fairfield was led by Brandon York with eight points.
Against Presque Isle, the Vikings trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half, but cut that deficit to 19-14 at halftime. The Vikings had a huge third quarter, outscoring Presque Isle 19-4 to take a 33-27 lead. Presque Isle scored the winning point off a foul shot with five second to play.
Savage led Caribou with 21 points, while Holdsworth and Bouchard each had six.
Presque Isle was paced by John Norton with 18 points.
AYBL slates grades 3-4 tryouts
Aroostook Youth Basketball League tryouts for Caribou third- and fourth-graders will wrap up this week.
The final day of girls tryouts will be Wednesday, Dec. 8 at Teague Park from 6:15-7:45 p.m. Boys tryouts will conclude Thursday, Dec. 9 with a session at CMS from 6:30-8 p.m.

Hitting clinic offered
The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team will host a two-day hitting clinic from 1-4 p.m. on Dec. 28 and 29 in Wieden Gymnasium.
This two-day hitting clinic will focus on the fundamentals of hitting and bunting a baseball. Much attention will be given to the proper grip and swing mechanics while engaging in various hitting drills. Three hitting cages and several hitting stations will ensure that each child receives the maximum hitting time.

UMPI softball team hosting spaghetti supper
The Campus Center multi-purpose rooms at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will be the site of a spaghetti supper, on Wednesday, Dec. 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for those 18 and under. Proceeds will benefit the Owls’ softball team.
Youth ski rental program
The Northern Skiers and the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department have partnered to bring the youth ski rental program back to the community. This year, rentals will be available to all Caribou youth and include skis, boots, poles and a carrier for a fee of $80 which includes a $20 refund upon return of the equipment in the spring.
