This photo of Robert Miller was taken in 1941 outside the family home on River Road wearing his Bangor and Aroostook bus driver uniform.

Robert W. Miller grew up in Caribou (Caribou High Class of 1935) on River Road. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War Two with a Fleet Marine detachment. He first served in the Atlantic Fleet on the battleship USS Massachusetts, seeing action off North Africa during Operation Torch. Later in the war, Bob served in the Pacific Fleet on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill. He received the Bronze Star for his actions when the carrier was hit by two kamikazes off Okinawa in 1945. After the war Bob returned to Aroostook County to work for the B&A Railroad and Geiger Brothers.

Before he entered the service, Robert drove a bus for the Bangor and Aroostook bus service; when he returned home from WW II in 1945 he showed up at the B&A Bangor bus station for a ride home, but none of the drivers were available to drive the bus north to Caribou. They asked him if he could drive the bus and he said “sure.”

Bob drove himself home from the war (along with the other passengers).
