To the editor:
It has been a hectic and happy month at Halfway Home Pet Rescue. We have been spaying, neutering, leukemia testing, worming and giving shots until I think I am dreaming about cats, but then I wake up and it is not a dream. I just cannot imagine being able to get through one day without the help of so many good people: some doing cat chores; some doing paperwork; some running cats to the vet; some bringing them home again; some running food to the Free Pet Food Pantry, some cleaning, loving, and playing with cats. We have a couple of wonderful young girls who come in and read to the feral kittens and help teach them to play and respond to humans. Then we have our loyal Toby’s Treasures Store volunteers. Man, I think half of Caribou is helping us.
Because our teenagers are going back to school, we will soon need more volunteers, and everyone does their task with a big smile. This is great! I am loving it.
Helping homeless, helpless animals is one great way for parents to teach their youngsters about responsibility and good citizenship. There is enough work for everyone and the more help we get, the greater the number of animals we can help. We do the best we can with so little space. Depending on the community, we refer people to their contracted shelter and then we refer to our Free Pet Food Pantry. We ask people to feed the cat until we can find room or other help for them. It is so hard to say “there is no room at the Inn.” My biggest wish is that people will become so kind and giving that all shelters will be put out of business. Neuter and spay — it’s the only way.
We will have a huge adult cat show on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Toby’s Treasures on Sweden St., in Caribou. All cats over the age of 6 months are free to the right family. All free adoptable cats are leukemia tested, spayed/neutered, distemper and rabies shots and cleared of any parasites. Each cat will go home with a gift litter box of at least a day’s supply of litter, litter scoop, dry food, toys, a hand knit blanket by Alice Malloch of Presque Isle, and some canned food. Applications will still be taken and references will be checked before adoption.
