The club joined the school’s athletic department in donating more than $2,500 for three automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be placed at Fort Fairfield High School, the elementary school and at Aroostook Valley Country Club.
An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation – the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia – allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
According to FFABC president Larry Gardner who stated, “We certainly felt the need to have these machines in places where not only our student-athletes participate but where there are crowds of people as well, that if needed could save a person’s life,” said FFABC president Larry Gardner. “All of our coaches are trained in the use of the AEDs as well as CPR.
“We also felt it important to donate one to Aroostook Valley Country Club as we have students playing on the golf team as well as hundreds of people who play at the club weekly.
