Limestone fired-up for Fourth of July

LIMESTONE, Maine — If the flags cropping up all over town in preparation for the annual Fourth of July festivities are a good indication of anything, it’s surely that the colors of a Limestone summer are red, white and blue.     The Fourth of July has become synonymous with the Limestone Parade and fireworks display over Trafton Lake, and the Greater Limestone Chamber of Commerce (GLCC) has been fund-raising and scheduling since early spring to make sure this year’s big events pack as much excitement as previous years.
This year’s parade is themed “In God we Trust” and takes place at noon on the Fourth. This is one of the largest events hosted by the Chamber and entries are still being submitted to date — it’s estimated that there will be 75 to 80 entries. Clowns, bands, special entertainment — the GLCC has spent approximately $2,500 making sure that this years’ parade is a hit.
Floats and entries can still be admitted into the parade by calling the town office at 325-4704 or by calling GLCC Secretary Grace O’Neal at 325-3491. Individuals interested in participating in the parade can also simply show up to the line-up at 11 a.m. or earlier at the Limestone Community School. It’s estimated that there will be 75 to 80 entries for the parade.
A new pre-parade event was added to July 4 events this year though it’s yet to be determined whether or not Aroostook County can stomach it; for the youths who can seemingly never get their hands on enough pizza and for the adults with big appetites, AL-BEAR’S is sponsoring a pizza eating contest that starts at 9 a.m, (which allocates ample time for digestion before the parade). In the spirit of fairness, there are five different age categories: 4 to 6 years old, 7 to 9 years old, 10 to 13 years old, 14 to 17 years old and 18+. At the time of print, cheese pizza (and plenty of it) was planned for the eating extravaganza.
Other crowd pleasing events like the Street Dance, Tractor Pull, and the Chicken Pie Supper at the St. Louis Church are on the schedule again this year and are shaping up to be as just as memorable (and in some cases delicious) as last year.
Celebratory events started this past Monday with the beginning of Community Spirit Daze, where residential homes, businesses and churches in the town have been urged to decorate their exteriors with patriotic pride. Judging will be held next Wednesday.
Many popular events start as early as this Saturday, so clear your calendar and get ready for some good times:
