Memorial Day services at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, located on the Lombard Road in Caribou, will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 31. Leo Kieffer will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon event. The program for the annual ceremony will include the following:
Members of the Loring Job Corps Honor Guard, under the direction of Sgt. Major Roger Felix, will present the colors with an invocation and the benediction will be given by Fr. Jean Paul Labrie.
Musical selections during the program will feature Erin Buck, Caribou High School senior, singing the National Anthem, “God Bless America” and “Amazing Grace”.
Harry Hafford, chairman of the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery Association will welcome guests and dignitaries in attendance and program and speaker introductions will be provided by Dave Bell, ceremony co-chairman.
Also participating as guests speakers with Kieffer will be: Sharon Campbell, regional representative for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe; Phil Bosse, state office representative for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins; and Barbara Hayslett, district representative for U.S. Congressman Michael Michaud.
At the completion of the Memorial Day service, the ceremonial Laying of the Memorial Wreath will be presented by Hafford and Ssgt. Nathan Beaver, followed by a 21-Gun Salute, provided by members of the Madawaska American Legion Post 147.
Taps will be presented by Fred Ormezzani, member of the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery Committee.
On Sunday, May 30, brief ceremonies will be conducted at the following locations: the old cemetary in Stockholm at 8 a.m., the new Catholic cemetary in Stockholm at 8:15 a.m., the Protestant cemetary in Stockholm at 8:30 a.m., the New Sweden cemetary at 9 a.m., the Westmanland cemetary at 9:30 a.m., the Jemptland cemetary at10:00 a.m. and at the Cross Lake (Guerrette) cemetary at 11 a.m.
A memorial service will be at the Stockholm American Legion Post Everlasting Ceremony at 1 p.m.
Memorial Day Events, Monday, May 31
• 8 a.m. — Gold Star Mother’s Breakfast at the Henry B. Pratt Jr., American Legion Post 15.
• 10 a.m. — Memorial Day Parade (line-up at court house)
• 11a.m. — Memorial Service at Monument on South Main St.
• 1 p.m. — Memorial Day Ceremony at the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery (Lombard Road).
