Little League season to open

    The Caribou Little League season will officially commence with the traditional opening ceremonies tonight at 6:30 p.m.
    Regular season play opens Thursday with three games on the slate. S. W. Collins takes on Savings Bank of Maine and VFW meets up with Shop ’n Save on the Caribou Little League fields, while the Knights of Columbus play the Tigers in Woodland.     The remainder of the schedule for the week follows: Friday: Woodland Eagles at Police, Key Bank at North Stars; Saturday: KC at S.W. Collins (9 a.m.); Monday: Police at Savings Bank of Maine, Shop ’n Save at Woodland Eagles; Tuesday: North Stars at KC, Sleepers at Woodland Tigers.
    All games begin at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Junior League baseball tryouts

    The Caribou Little League’s 13 to 14 year-old Junior League will be holding its 2010 tryouts Sunday, May 16 at the Caribou High School baseball field from 1-4 p.m.
    Any child that missed the registration meeting in April can register at the tryouts. An adult should accompany each child and bring proof of age for the child.

Moose lottery online applications due Friday

    Online applications for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s 2010 Moose Permit Lottery are due by 11:59 p.m. this Friday, May 14. The only applications still being accepted are those filed online at www.mefishwildlife.com.
    “We’re encouraging applicants to apply online during the day or at their earliest convenience before the close of business at 5 p.m. on Friday,” said Bill Swan, IF&W Director of Licensing. “That way, if any questions arise, applicants can contact us so we can assist them.”

    Hunters are finding that using the online application system is easy and convenient, Swan said.
    This year, 3,140 permits will be drawn for the fall harvest. Last year, 82 percent of hunters were successful.
    The 2010 Moose Permit Lottery Drawing will be held Thursday, June 17 at L.L. Bean in Freeport.

Softball tourney planned in Houlton

    The Houlton Softball Association is also gearing up for its fifth annual ‘Beat The Heat’ men’s softball tournament, tentatively scheduled for June 4-6.
     This will be a double-elimination tournament with prizes, a homerun contest, food, drinks and a lot of fun. Players do not have to be in the Houlton league to participate in the tournament.
    The entry fee is $170, and T-shirts are awarded to the champions. Last year’s tournament featured all local teams, including a team from Calais, as well as teams from Augusta and Presque Isle.

Lifeguard class offered at PI pool

    The Presque Isle Indoor Pool will host an American Red Cross lifeguard class on May 16 and 23 and June 6 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
    Participants must be 15 years of age or older and able to swim 300 yards, doing a front crawl with good rhythmic breathing and breaststroke. Pre-registration is required for the class. For more information, call the indoor pool at 764-2564.
