LD 1610 truly a great bill

To the editor:
I’m submitting this letter today to share what I believe is some good news for our state. Maine is very close to passing a bill that will provide help and reassurance to families caring for adults with dementia and also those with cognitive or developmental impairment. The bill I’m referring to is LD 1610, “An Act to Establish the Silver Alert Program”.     The Silver Alert is very similar to the Amber Alert system. It would allow our local law enforcement to activate an alert that would be broadcast statewide, using voluntary services provided by the media. This would save precious time that is currently needed to start a wide search for an adult that is missing. The alert would be broadcast on radio and television.
In addition to statewide law enforcement, we would have the potential of a very large number of residents on the lookout for our missing loved one in a very short time. The bill also provides for training to be provided to law enforcement in conjunction with the current Amber Alert training. It is truly a great bill with little to no cost to our taxpayers.
This bill will become increasingly helpful to all citizens because Maine has the “oldest” population in the United States. I encourage anyone that would support this bill to consider contacting their local representatives to ensure that this beneficial bill is passed.
