St. Pierre departs on U.S.S. Carney

    Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Gary A. St. Pierre, son of Jeannette and Albert St. Pierre of Caribou, along with 260 fellow sailors assigned to U.S.S. Carney home-ported in Mayport, Fla., recently deployed for approximately six months to the Mediterranean  and Middle East.     St. Pierre is a 1982 graduate of Caribou High School who joined the Navy in February 1993.
    The U.S.S. Carney will join Carrier Strike Group Eight in support of anti-piracy, air defense, maritime security and theater security cooperation operations with United States and Coalition partners. Carrier Strike Group Eight is comprised of additional ships to include U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S.S. Farragut, U.S.S. McFaul and U.S.S. Hue City.
     The U.S.S. Carney is the 14th destroyer in her class. Commissioned on April 13, 1996 the carrier first deployed in 1997 to the Mediterranean Sea as a member of the U.S.S. George Washington Battle Group.
    On the ship’s second deployment in 1999, it set a milestone as the first U.S. Navy ship to operate in a bilateral United States-Japan naval exercise conducted in the Mediterranean Sea.
