VFW Auxiliary announces essay winners

    The Lister /Knowlton VFW Post 9389 Ladies Auxiliary in Caribou, recently sponsored their annual essay contest, “What America Means to Me.” This competition was open to grade-five students at the Caribou Middle School.

    Of the essays submitted, the top three were selected and those students were honored with a certificate and monetary awards of $25, $15 and $5 respectively. Those students whose worked earned them a place in the top three spots  were Connor Plourde, first ; Kaitlyn R. Nadeau, second; and Drew Tardie, third place.
    Students receiving honorable mention certificates included: Erin Kashian, Julia Page, Madeline Gudde, Jill Courchene, Casey Wilcox, Jillian Jandreau and Susan Lewis.
    During the awards presentation each fifth-grade student received a ruler printed with each American President and the Pledge of Allegiance. The CMS students were also given patriotic pencils, a small American flag and a booklet explaining proper flag etiquette.

    Seven classrooms at the Caribou Middle School are now displaying new American flags, donated to the school by the Lister/Knowlton VFW Post 9389 Ladies Auxiliary. Jola Hebert, center, a CMS teacher was presented the seven new flags by VFW Auxiliary members, Pat Edgecomb, left, and Yvonne Theriault. The Auxiliary members also announced that Hilltop Elementary School will be receiving one new classroom flag and Teague Park Elementary will be presented with five.
