CARIBOU – The Limestone Snow Hawks Snowmobile Club and Spud Speedway are bringing an old staple of Aroostook County back this winter with vintage snowmobile racing planned at the track. Snowmobile races were held all over the County and Canada in the 1960s and 70s. Club President Phil St. Peter and track owner Troy Haney both believe the time is right to bring the old tradition back as vintage snowmobile races are emerging throughout Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.
The Snow Hawks joined the Vintage Snowmobile Racing Association and became the location for both its first and final races of the year. The association created a uniform rule package for sleds to compete under which are 1973 and older.
There will be stock and modified division races as well as a Powder Puff women’s race and a kids’ division race. Racers from throughout Maine and New Hampshire will be on hand to compete against the local racers.
The first races are slated for Saturday, Jan. 16. The Caribou Winter Carnival Race is scheduled for Feb. 13 and the season finale will take place March 6.
All races will start at 2 p.m., meaning this weekend’s competition will most likely finish under the lights.
The snowmobile club is using this event as a fundraiser to support the club for dragging and maintaining the snowmobile trails in the Limestone area. All three Saturdays will feature homemade chicken stew and ploys for only $5.
