There’s a new organization in town and friends in this group are seeing community support growing rapidly.     The Veterans Memorial Park Association is the result of a brainstorming session that took place two years ago when two local veterans were literally sitting at a round table chatting about their lives as veterans. During this conversation, “My friend stated that he was troubled about the future of all the veterans in The County and he wanted to do something special for them while he was still living,” said Carroll St. Peter, now chairperson of the newly formed Veterans Memorial Park Association. “His statement hit me full force — in my heart — and I told him that I agreed with him completely.
In October of this year, St. Peter along with a number of other local veterans put together a few ideas and prior to the eight of them leaving their breakfast discussion, the outline for Veterans Memorial Park Association had been formed.
The objective of the VMPA is to develop a Veterans Memorial park, so that the Association is able to foster fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational needs to all our citizens within Aroostook County. The goal includes to bring all organizations and citizens of this and surrounding communities to one focal point, and that is to have a Veterans Memorial Park in Caribou.
According to St. Peter, the Veterans Memorial Park, Association is currently being registered in the State of Maine; is the only one in the state and is not part of any organization or group.
Anyone wishing to become a part of the Friends of the Association will be registered and their names will be placed in the Associations’ historical documents. Friends of the association may provide input to the round table at any meeting.
The actual local location of the future Veteran’s Memorial Park in Caribou will be announced at a later time.
For more information individuals are encouraged to write to Veterans Memorial Park, P.O. Box 785 Caribou, Maine  04736 or contact Carroll St. Peter at 498-8907.
More information regarding the newly organized VMPA will appear in future editions of the Aroostook Republican.
