Trying to make a difference

To the editor:
I am a newly elected Selectperson for the town of Limestone and write this letter to share with the people of Limestone my true feelings regarding my position. After the September 16 selectperson's meeting, I contemplated resigning from my position. I was reprimanded by a few of my fellow board members for speaking out against another member of the board for the inaccurate information he presented to the town's people and that I acted inappropriately.     Yes, I am guilty of making phone calls to different parties for information. My purpose as a selectperson for the town is to obtain the required information and what is best for the town, not what my personal feelings might be. My counterparts may continue to reprimand me for gathering this information and proving to the town whether or not the information they are providing is accurate. That is fine. I will continue to stand up for what I believe and continue to try to make a difference, which is what my ultimate goal was when I took on this challenge.
There was a clear objective at that meeting to silence my voice for the people of this town. After much soul-searching and communications with the people I represent, my critics will not silence me. I was voted into office to speak for the people in this town and others on the board will not chase me away.
A comment was made at this meeting that "I should watch what I say since I am a business owner in this town." This is a true representation of the cause of the lack of business in this town. I feel I have contributed much hope to this town through hard work and investment. It is through this hard work that I want to create a chain reaction.
This town has been run on the same platform for too many years with no positive outcome in sight. It's time to make change and turn this around. As was stated by an individual at this meeting, it is "sad we are losing our children." They are leaving for greater opportunities in life to get out of the stalemate community they were raised in. Our property values are crumbling, property taxes continue to increase and there is very little investment in this town. This is truly a dire situation and the management team of this town must make the required critical changes for progress.
I will continue to seek out the accuracy of information and work to ease the burden of the taxpayer. I want to create a better future for this town. I know what it takes to survive and I know what this town needs to survive. I will hold to the truth and speak without fear. See you at the next meeting.
