Tailgate BBQ set Saturday to celebrate 45 years of soccer
As part of the year-long Caribou 150th Birthday Celebration, the Caribou Athletic Boosters will host a Tailgate BBQ this Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the Caribou High School soccer complex. The Tailgate BBQ will feature a traditional menu of hamburgers and hotdogs, along with sausage grinders, homemade fries and homemade doughboys. Proceeds from the BBQ and a special 50/50 drawing will benefit a new concession stand planned on the campus of Caribou High School. A halftime presentation during the boys’ varsity game will honor the 45-year tradition of organized soccer in Caribou. The soccer program was established in Caribou in 1962, and Caribou played its first league games in 1964. All CHS soccer alums, both male and female, are encouraged to attend the special halftime presentation.
Four games are scheduled this Saturday with the girls varsity and boys junior varsity teams playing Hermon High School at 1 p.m, and the boys’ varsity and girls’ junior varsity teams playing at 3 p.m.
Caribou residents are encouraged to come out and support the home team, eat some great food and support the Caribou Athletic Boosters.

MWSC athletes to train in Utah
The Maine Winter Sports Center’s Biathlon Team is off to Utah for three weeks of training. The team will train primarily at Soldier Hollow, the venue for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Joining the MWSC Biathlon Team will be both the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams.
Both MWSC teams will train alongside the very best biathletes in the United States. Taking advantage of the high altitude and beautiful surroundings, the camp will be both challenging as well as a psychological boost.
“The athletes have trained well while at home over the past six weeks,” stated Biathlon Coach Gary Colliander. “They’re really ready for this trip, to get out west, to be in a different environment, and see where they stack up with the others.”
During the camp, the athletes will take part in two rollerski races. For the women, these races are just an indicator to see how they rank amongst each other. For the men, however, these races will finalize the December World Cup Team which has one spot still up for grabs.
MWSC biathletes attending are BethAnn Chamberlain, Caribou; Andrea Mayo, Soldier Pond; Grace Boutot, Fort Kent; Bill Bowler, Wausau, Wisc.; Eliot Neal, Wilson, Wyoming; Russell Currier, Stockholm and Walt Shepard, Yarmouth.
