To the editor:
Although this article is addressed primarily to the Caribou Chief of Police, two other groups need to be made aware of a dangerous activity in our fair city. They are respectively the Caribou City Council and lastly, you and I, my fellow citizens. This crisis is the flagrant, excessive speeding by vehicles of all types — the whole spectrum of private, public, commercial, utility, service and even the 18-wheelers in areas of reduced speed zones. This is occurring night and day.
Chief Gahagan, I commend you and your department officers. They are a good cadre of highly trained professionals. It would command an excellent rating save for one big discrepancy — enforcing posted speed limits and noises — loud late-night, early-morning violations.
Chief, are you aware of the speeding on Route 89? If so, for how long and why haven’t steps been taken to slow people down? Are you short of another officer to handle this?
And council person, are you willing to put budget constraints against the likelihood of a death or injury?
My citizen friends, do you want this to continue. Will you attend town gatherings and if put on referendum, will you vote? No fudging now. Answer. It’s up to you.
