To the editor:
Consider the following question. On a cold, frosty, fall evening with the wind out of the west, would you enjoy putting on a pair of shorts and a lightweight top, and sitting outdoors on a cold metal bench for 80 minutes? This is the situation that we ask our boys and girls soccer players to endure as they entertain us. Madawaska and Presque Isle are examples of communities that have made an effort to protect their players from the wind, cold, rain and snow that our late fall soccer season includes. Presque Isle has purchased ready-made plastic shells which give some protection and blend well with the décor of the Johnson Athletic Complex. On the other hand, Madawaska has constructed wooden huts which give their players excellent protection from the elements.
I have no doubt that Caribou, given a plan and a good number of volunteers, could provide an adequate shelter for its soccer players and the visiting competitors. We adults come to the games wearing about everything we own in an effort to stay somewhat warm. Watching these young players is enough to give anyone a few more shivers.
