Caribou junior league team sweeps Madawaska
Caribou hosted Madawaska for a baseball doubleheader Sunday in the junior league for ages 13 and 14, and the hosts earned a sweep by scores of 10-0 and 13-6. Caribou, which finished the season with a 7-1 record, got a complete-game one-hitter from Matt Curry in game one. Dean Walker and Curry had two hits each for the winners, while Charlie Nadeau had a hit for Madawaska to spoil the no-hit bid.
In the second contest, Caribou scored four times in the fifth inning to break open a close game. Matt Milliard and Alex Losieniecki did the pitching for Caribou, with Milliard, Curry and Breen Blackstone leading the offense with two hits apiece.
Golf tournament scheduled in Limestone
The Limestone Project Graduation Class of 2010 will hold a two-person scramble golf tournament at Limestone Country Club Aug. 23.
Registration is from 8-8:30 a.m. and a shot gun start is at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $60 per team, which includes one mulligan and one length of string. Prizes will go to the top three teams for both gross and net. Cart availability is limited. Contact 328-7277 for more information.
Caribou High School to host community race
The sixth annual Alumni/Community Cross Country Race will be held Friday, Aug. 21 beginning at 8 p.m. on the Caribou High School’s lighted trails.
Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. The course is 2.75-miles in length and is for people of all ages. Individuals and teams can sign up. Teams can have up to five people, but must have at least three to score and can be all-male, all-female or mixed.
There is no entry fee. Runners will start in various groups according to their age category. Groups will start one minute apart, so everyone has a fair chance of winning. Scoring will be by place, not time, and winners will receive Alumni Race T-shirts.
Registration continues at Presque Isle pool
The fall swimming session is under way at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool, but some classes still have openings. Contact the indoor pool at 764-2564 to inquire.
Fall general swim hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1-2:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 7-8:45 p.m. A special general swim session will be offered Friday, Aug. 21 from 1-2:45 p.m.
Third annual CCA golf tourney set Aug. 29
Cornerstone Christian Academy will host its third annual CCA Golf Classic Saturday, Aug. 29 at Caribou Country Club.
The event is a three-person scramble with a minimum team handicap of 30. The tourney will get under way with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The fee to register is $120.

Caribou girls lose tourney final
The Caribou girls varsity soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Presque Isle in the finals of the 17th annual PIHS Invitational Soccer Tournament, held Thursday and Saturday.
Caribou reached the championship after tying Ashland, 0-0; defeating Madawaska, 1-0; blanking Fort Kent, 2-0; edging past Houlton, 3-2; shutting out Van Buren, 2-0; and losing to Presque Isle, 1-0, in the round-robin portion of the tourney. Their 4-1-1 record was good enough to earn a berth in the championship round.
The Viking boys beat Ashland, 2-0; fell to Madawaska, 3-0; tied Fort Kent, 0-0; tipped Houlton, 1-0; stopped Van Buren, 1-0; and tied Presque Isle, 0-0. The 3-1-2 record fell just shy of qualifying for the title game, as PI defeated Madawaska in the finals, 1-0.
