The weather chose not to cooperate at first but the wind kept the bugs at bay, as canoeists and kayakers lined up to sign up for a slot in the 29th Annual Little Madawaska River Race, May 17. The popular race, which begins at the bridge on Little Madawaska Lake and ends at the bridge in Stockholm is sponsored by the Stockholm American Legion.
Dave Sterris registers three of the many canoeists and kayakers anxious to test the waters during the recent Little Madawaska River Race, sponsored by the Stockholm American Legion.
This year the water level was lower than usual, causing finishing times to be somewhat slower than in years past for the 49 participants over the 5.3 mile course.
Winning times in the respective classes were:
• C-1 Men’s Recreational — Chris and John Bell, Caribou — 11:10.55
• C-2 Recreational — Matt Turnbull and Mel Thompson, New Sweden — 1:23.45
• Junior Division — Pat, Jeremy and Whitney — 1:56.30
• Junior Divison — Fran Cyr, Caribou — 1:01.55
• Century Divison — Tom Campbell and Bub Anderson, Stockholm and New Sweden
• Women’s Recreational — Roxie Anderson and Sierra Theriault, Stockholm, 1:50.01
• Kayak — Dave McCrossin, Woodland — 1:01.20
• Kayak — Rachel Small, Stockholm — 1:17.57
