After a weekend loss to the Old Town Coyotes, Caribou softball was hungry for a win, and they found that win in a Monday afternoon game against the Houlton Lady Shires. Emily Staples threw a winning game for Caribou with eight strikeouts, and she found help from teammate Kristen Espling, who batted two home runs, including a two-run homer in the third as the Lady Vikings took four early runs.
On Saturday, the Lady Vikings fell in a doubleheader to Old Town. The first game was a 10-6 loss for Staples and Espling’s offensive strength wasn’t enough to lift the Vikings above the Coyotes. Game two ended in a closer score, with Caribou trailing 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Espling contributed two singles to help the Vikings score their only two runs in the 3-2 loss.
The Viking baseball team continued its winning streak with a 10-run rule win over Houlton Monday night. Taking the mound for Caribou was Cameron Anderson, who pitched for five innings, only allowing the Shires one hit. A double and two singles came from Chad McCarthy, along with two RBIs and Pat Thibodeau and Philip St. Peter contributed doubles and two RBIs as well.
Saturday, the Vikings took back-to-back wins in their doubleheader against Old Town. Thibodeau homered twice, including a fifth-inning grand slam during the Vikes 14-4 first game victory. Adding to Caribou’s score was St. Peter, who hit a two-run home run in the third and Brandon Caverhill contributed four singles.
The second game ended 11-9 with St. Peter taking the mound but despite the close score, Caribou maintained the lead, responding to Old Town’s fourht inning three-run rally with two runs of their own to bring the score back in Caribou’s favor, 7-6. Matt Kinney singled twice, tripled and had an RBI and McCarthy doubled twice in the Vikings’ victory.
Staples shut down Fort Kent in the Lady Vikings 14-0 win against the Warriors May 13. Staples recorded 11 strikeouts and Kristen Espling hit a two-run homer to start the Vikings off on their 3-hit, 14-run victory. Espling also contributed a two-run double and Ashley Doucette singled once.
