Chad McCarthy, the recipient of the 2009 Caribou Little League Scholarship, played for Union 122 and JV and varsity baseball at Caribou High School. McCarthy has also played Babe Ruth baseball and has umpired Little League games and coached in the Caribou Recreation Department’s various sports programs. McCarthy also played on the Woodland Eagles team in Little League.
Absent from the event, Espling and McCarthy were both presented with a $200 check and plaque at their respective home games on Saturday.
Sleepers 16, Northstars 0
On Friday, Sleepers played the Northstars, taking the win 16-0. Justin Ouellette pitched five scoreless innings for Sleepers, walking one and striking out eight.
Michael Hunter pitched the sixth inning striking out two. Mason Huck combined with Ouellette, Brendan Cyr and Cole Jackson for ground outs. Ouellette and Connor Thibeault each caught infield pop flies. Offensively, Cyr hit a double, driving in two runs and scoring one.
Hunter had two hits, a triple, one RBI and scored four times. Thibeault hit three singles, a double, stole two bases, had two RBIs and scored four runs. Huck hit a single, double and triple, scored twice, stole two bases and had three RBIs. Alec Cyr scored his first Little League run after being walked and Riley McDuffie scored a run and was walked twice.
For the Northstars, Shane Landeen pitched three innings, striking out six. Gunner Bondeson pitched two innings, striking out four.
Brady Anderson pitched the final inning, striking out one and contributing in the other two outs with an assist and catching a pop fly to end the top of the inning. Andrew Christie provided the best scoring opportunity for the Northstars after drawing a walk and making it to third after a past ball.
VFW 11, Eagles 2
The VFW Little League team met up with the Eagles May 15 and won 11-2. For the VFW, Dylan Berkoski was 4-for-4 with a two-run homerun over the center field wall, and triple. Jake Perrault had two doubles.
Also contributing one double each was Austin Brown and Jared Fox. The VFW was behind at the top of the second 1-0, but scored twice in that inning and three in the next for a 5-1 lead on their way to the win. For the Eagles, Hunter Milliard stole home. Berkoski took the win with ten strike-outs and Fox suffered the loss but also pitched 10 strike-outs.
Knights of Columbus 6, Key Bank 5
Taylor Thibodeau pitched a winning game for K of C on May 15. Joining him on the mound during the game were Brian Corbin and Devin Martin, as the K of C rallied in the third inning. Thibodeau led the rally with an inside the park home run and a double.
Though Key Bank had six hits, K of C catcher Jillian Flynn threw out five base runners to end several scoring threats. Key Bank players Nick Frost, Dustin Bouchard and Ryan Washington pitched and Bouchard had two singles while Washington contributed a double.
Noah Frost hit a single and Scott McCroggin had two singles for Key Bank.
Sleepers 9, Knights of Columbus 5
On May 19, Sleepers beat Knights of Columbus 9-5. Hunter pitched three innings for Sleepers, allowing only four runs, five hits, walking five and striking out eight.
Thibeault pitched the remainder of the game, allowing only one run, two hits, two walks and striking out three. Thibeault and Ouellette combined for a tag out at third while Hunter and Huck provided two ground outs for the team. Cyr had two unassisted outs at first. Cyr also scored two runs with a single.
Hunter scored two runs, hit two singles and had two RBIs. Ouellette scored a run, had a single, and RBI and a walk. Thibeault scored a run and had one hit. Huck hit a single, a double, had a walk and four RBIs. Alec Cyr, Emma Belyea and Spencer McDuffie all scored runs after being walked. R. McDuffie had a sacrifice bunt to move his younger brother into scoring position.
Connor Plourde pitched for two innings for K of C, allowing 5 runs, 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out two. Corbin Pitched the last three innings allowing 4 runs, 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out four.
Plourde contributed with several unassisted outs as well as two with assists. Plourde added to his night with a single, an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Thibodeau had two singles, a walk and scored a run. Flynn had a single, bunted her way onto first and scored a run. Kyle Soetaert-Beaulier scored a run, stole two bases and had a walk. Nick Sleeper scored a run after getting walked. Martin also had a hit for the Knights.
Collins 16, Police 1 A big first inning from S.W. Collins and some quality pitching from Dayne Savage was the big difference in this May 15 game. Savage went the distance striking out 13 batters and walking three.
Big bats from lead off hitters Donovan Savage and Zach Wright of Collins keep the bases in play all night while some patience at the plate put players on base up and down the lineup. Nate Wyman also went 2-3 with two runs and three RBI’s. Gabe Massey drew three walks and scored three runs.
The core of the Police’s lineup keep the Collins team on their heels with leadoff player Tyler Dombroski going 2-3 with a double and his team’s lone run. Austin Caverhill was 2-2 with an RBI double. On the mound in relief for the Police was the powerful Reece McDougal who recorded 6 strikeouts and gave up only one earned run in two and a half innings of work.
Espling, McCarthy recognized at opening night in Caribou
Caribou Little League opened its 2009 spring season on Wednesday, May 13 at the Robert White field in Caribou. After each team was introduced, Bob White announced the 2009 recipients of the Peter Ouellette and Caribou Little League Scholarships. Kristen Espling, the recipient of the 2009 Peter Ouellette Scholarship, played on the North Stars, Union 122 Middle School and four years on the Lady Viking’s softball team, where she is currently a senior and captain. Espling works in mini-vike soccer and basketball clinics and is employed by the Caribou Rec. Deparment.
