As local residents prepared for last weekend’s Citywide Yard Sale, determining what price to attach to their wares and wondering if the yard sale weather gods would be kind to them this year, Jena Holtz and Mark Hutton were making their own preparations. They were getting ready to attend the annual city-wide event, only they were traveling from Massachusetts for the event. Holtz, who is from New Bedford and her companion Mark, of Fitchburg, have planned on several occasions to be in Caribou for the City Wide Yard Sale, but there seem to always be a conflict with the date. “I first saw the advertisement for this sale in a magazine, about six years ago and this year all the stars and planets lined up so we could finally see what it was all about,” said Holtz.
“Yard sales aren’t anything new to me,” said Hutton, “but driving eight hours to get to one is. I’m glad we did though, it gave me a chance to see a different part of New England.” The reason yard sales aren’t anything out of the ordinary for the couple is because Holtz is the owner of a business called, ‘Jumble and Clutter, which she operates inside an old textile mill.
“Everyone is so very friendly here, I’ll admit I think this is a very unique city and holding this event makes it even more so,” claimed Holtz.
While checking out the goods offered throughout the city on Saturday, what better place was there to peruse than Second Hand Rose. It was there the two visitors spent a period of time chatting with the shop’s owner, Dot McDuffie, “We had such a good time there,” laughed Holtz.
Holtz and Hutton stayed at the Old Iron Inn Bed and Breakfast on High Street and commented on how much they were enjoying their stay there and how wonderful the food was. The two also mentioned having had dinner the previous evening at Napoli’s and she raved over the butternut squash ravioli, “It was such a large serving and it was so good, I just kept eating and eating.”
