Superintendent of Schools
LIMESTONE — A public forum on the ‘Future of the Limestone Community School (LCS)’ was held on Dec. 16. The forum was initiated to solicit the community’s input as the Limestone School Committee continues to explore solutions to the school system’s ongoing budged problems. With over 80 community members in attendance, Mike McCormick of McCormick Consultants presented a wealth of information that his company has gathered on the school system. The compiled data resulted in several recommendations including joining the proposed Regional School Unit (RSU), making a significant change in how public education is provide to Limestone students, strengthening the relationships with the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), and considering operating both schools under one administrative organization.
Following the data presentation, McCormick described several different options for the school system to consider including; tuitioning students, building a new school, transferring the school’s ownership to MSSM, and developing an academy.
A quick ‘straw vote’ of each option revealed positive support for creating an academy and giving the building to MSSM. Those in attendance were less supportive of those options that included tuitioning students and building a new school.
A second public forum will be held on Thursday, Jan 8 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Limestone Community School. The purpose of this forum is to share additional information about the possible solutions presented at the Dec. 16 meeting and to further solicit community members’ input.
